Tuscarora, Nevada, 52 miles northeast of Elko, on a high plateau lying between the Independence Mountains to the east and the Tuscarora Range to the west, at an elevation of 6,000 feet, has a history dating back to the spring of 1867 when a Shoshone revealed gold to a trader on the Humboldt River. By summer of that year, 300 miners had rushed to the new gold fields. In 1871, a disgusted gold miner named W. O Weed found rich silver veins on the east side of Mount Blitzen, and seven years later, Tuscarora was a booming town boasting a newspaper, opium dens, and gambling houses. Livestock was raised on surrounding ranches, and the Central Pacific Railroad vied for Tuscarora's bullion and freight trade. By 1880, 1400 Americans lived here. The property for sale is located on historic Weed Street, once the main street of the town. It boasts an ancient cottonwood and is a short walk to the local post office and the renowned Tuscarora Pottery School and rooming house. Today, Tuscarora has approximately 25 year-round residents, a number of whom are artists or artisans: painters, poets, potters, crafters of jewelry.
